Ladybugs

Ladybird BeetleLadybugs, also known as Ladybird Beetles, sometimes invade homes during fall. The most common species to do this is the Asian Ladybird Beetle, which is widespread throughout the U.S. They are attracted most strongly to south-facing, light-colored buildings. They become active on warm days during winter and early spring when they attempt to get outside.

Lady beetles are predators that feed on other insects as both larvae and adults. There are more than 450 known species of lady beetles in North America. A number of exotic lady beetles have been purposely released in the U.S. as biological control agents for control of certain insect pests. The Asian Lady Beetle lives primarily in trees and eats mostly aphids. It is highly prolific, lives up to three years and has many color forms. It became established in the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 1980s after a series of releases by U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service scientists in Byron, Ga., and in other locations. Since those releases, the beetle has rapidly expanded its range and is now commonly found throughout the U.S.

Adult beetles are about 1/4 inch long, and the most common form is mustard-to-red with 16 or more black spots. A key identification feature of Asian Lady Beetles is the presence of two big false "eyes", twin football-shaped white markings behind the head. Females lay from 500 to 700 eggs each.

Ladybug Control

You can try to catch and release them outside, let them leave by themselves or vacuum them up. Care should be used when handling them; they emit a smelly orange-colored fluid from leg joints that can stain walls and fabrics, though it is not harmful to humans.
